Dallas’s Story

In 2022, Lt Dallas Ransom, US Space Force and son of PDX Wine Events founder, Erin Palmer, suffered an AVM rupture at Keesler Air Force base in Mississippi. He was taken by Lifeflight to Mobile, Alabama where he underwent the first of eight lifesaving brain surgeries. This stabilized him, and he was later transported to Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona where Dr. Michael Lawton and his team performed a virtually unsurvivable brain surgery. Dallas was paralyzed on his right side, unable to speak or swallow. He fought hard, and regained about 90% of his function and language. In May of 2024 he endured a horrendous setback when his original TBI resulted in delayed Obstructive Hydrocephalus. He was hospitalized for another 111 days and survived four more brain surgeries.

Now he  is medically stable and in the rebuilding phase of his life back in his hometown in Oregon. In March of 2025 he utilized a VA loan and purchased his first home (which was less expensive than renting!) The very next week he received an exoskeleton robotic arm.  Soon after he was able to match with a service dog. He continues to do hours of work everyday to regain his independence and life.

Many people have asked how they can support Dallas; and for that we are very grateful. Below are some active areas of support that Dallas could use. Our community has been incredible and it is with great appreciation that we accept your gifts of time, well wishes, letters, and financial support.

Thank you for being part of our journey!

Sincerely, Erin (& Dallas)

LYB Retreat Fundraiser

In September of 2025 Dallas attended a Love Your Brain retreat in Colorado. LYB is a non-profit and attendees are asked to raise money to help cover the cost of their program and to help other folks attend camp.

Dallas spent a week with other TBI survivors while building physical and emotional resiliency.  It was life changing and he cannot wait to go to a future camp.

One of the most difficult things of surviving a life threatening medical situation is isolation. Folks who experience medical trauma that drags on for months or years become incredibly isolated. Please consider donating to LYB in Dallas’s name. This will help Dallas, and other extraordinary survivors attend future LYB camps.

Service Dog

In 2024 Dallas was connected with the Daunteless Veteran Foundation. Dauntless worked with the incredible non-profit JLAD (Joys of Living Assistance Dogs) to help Dallas qualify for a service dog.

Dallas was quickly approved and went into the queue. Service dogs are not matched by the “next person on the list”; rather they have to be a match for skills/ tasks that the dog is proficient in, and how those match to the person in need.

The wait can be two or more years. Dallas was incredibly lucky to be paired in slightly under a year with Irvin, who is trained in PTSD disruption, and seizure recovery.

Our donations to Dauntless Veterans Foundation help match veterans with service dogs. Our goal is to raise funds for one dog, one veteran, one year! Let’s go!

General Support

Overcoming a life threatening, life altering situation is financially draining; even for the lucky folks who have insurance and family support.

We spend a shocking amount of money on medical travel, therapy and supplies, medical devices, etc. Family members who support Dallas’s recovery do so at their own professional expense. Any amount you are wishing to share helps to lessen the stress for the care team.

Support we receive from the community is most commonly spent on groceries and adaptive home-health supplies.

If you’d like to specify what your gift is for, feel free! Treats like, “dinner out!”, or “buy a toy for your dog” are always welcome! We appreciate being in your thoughts- always!
